I'm more or less on the fence. I like the Anime becuase, as stated by chimchirio, you can see everything kind of come to life. It gives them color and (apparent) motion. Plus, I'm always anxious to hear the soundtrack to a good anime. I'm a music buff so the sound effects and music in an anime can make or break it for me. I am pretty serious. I can flat out hate an anime simply for crappy voice acting or a poor score.
On the other hand, I like the manga because it tends to have more of the meat of a story whereas, oftentimes when a manga is transfered from paper to the screen, the anime studio will tend to want to mix up the order of events (cause I guess they think they can tell someone else's story better or something) or add in a lot of filler junk. The manga is usually a bit more pure than the anime.
In some cases, I actually like the manga and anime equally. This is especially true with stories that transfer well between the two mediums, such as Death Note, which was fantastic in both anime and manga. And, even though there are huge differences between the two, I kind of love the Fruits Basket anime and manga equally becuase while they rush the story and leave out different parts in order to finish the anime series, both are extremely enjoyable. However, I would suggest to anyone new to the whole Fruits Basket craze: go ahead and enjoy the anime then read the manga. Both are very nice in their own ways and if you view them in that order, you'll get surprises and fulfillment without too much frustration or confusion.
So, yeah, it depends for me.
