Step 5: Enrich your drawings by adding shadows and textures.

Supplies Required: A scanner, computer with the image editing software PhotoShop installed, and manga nets.

Traditionally, this step is the most time consuming and expensive, but with the help of computer now a days, it can be 20 times easier than before.

The shadows and textures in manga arts are done with manga nets. They are whole sheets of repeating graphics, used to create gray effects, textures or decorative effects. There are hundreds of different manga nets for different purpose.

Now let's get started. Image

First, scan your drawings into the computer. The resolution should be no less than 150 dpi. 300 dpi is preferred by most publishers.

Second, refine the ink marks. Change the layer from “Background” into “Layer 0” by double clicking it. (Later you should also create another layer underneath layer0, and fill it with white for background color)

Use Select Color Range function to select the white area, and clean all up.

Now the page becomes transparent.

Use Inverse function to inverse the selection, which become all the black areas.

Fill the selection with black foreground color (by doing that, the color of your ink marks are consistent for publishing purpose).

Then deselect the image, and use eraser to clean up all the unwanted spots, and finish the process of refining the ink marks.

You are halfway there, just hanging on~~ Image

Third
, add manga nets into your drawingss. I pre-scanned all my manga nets into my computer to use, using the same resolution as scanning my drawings (I will see if I can share some of my manga nets here when I get a chance, but the file is too large so I still look for a better way to do it. But remember you can always make your own using the computer.). On your drawing, use Magic Wand tool (or Edit in Quick Mask Mood Function) to select the area where you want to paste the nets in.

Copy the net and paste into your drawings.

Forth: Now finish all the editing, merge the layers and save the image as JPG format. I personally keep a Photoshop format of the same image as back-up, just in case I need to make changes later on.

Step 6: Final touches of for your manga – adding texts into the dialog boxes.

Revisit the previous step:
Step 4: Start your manga drawings.

You can find the resolution selection when you scan the pages into PC. Normally it gives you a drop-down menu when open the scanner function, shows the options as 75 dpi, 150dpi, 300dpi etc. Just make sure you have the right one before start scanning.

Also, if you want to keep your pages transparent, just save the file as gif or png format. Photoshop can handle this very well. ^^

Okay I am having trouble getting the magic want to make selections like you did. I mean when I click it doesn't even select all of the same color, just a small dot. It worked once somehow but the next time I tried it didn't and I have no idea how to use the edit in mask mode or whatever it's called. If you could help, I need it.
