manga tutorial 2 supplies--->

Postby ariko yamato on Mon Jan 05, 2009 8:17 pm

manga supplies can include various things, from pens to pencil, from soft to rough papers, all different sorts of equipment.
it all depends on the effects and looks your going for. i prefer printer paper but there is a variety of other textures for you to go with, whatever suits you. to a lot of people the kind of pencil is also a specific type, mine is mechanical, but i do use sketching or copic brand graphite pencils.
its always good to start off with these main essentials, you can work your way up from there.

Also you will need tone screens. These are self-adhesive sheets that come in varies shades of grey. Because most manga is done in black and white shaded areas are often done with halftone sheets. You just need to place the sheet over the area needing shade then with an hobby knife CAREFULLY trim and peel away anything not shaded. This will give your manga art that professinal finish. You can purchase these sheets at any art supply store.

I use heavier paper with a smoother surface, because some paper can get trough after using the eraser, and the ink will bleed like crazy ><

Tone screens can be bought pretty cheap. But, if you have photoshop, this site has a large selection:

Using these you'd add the tone screen on your computer after you scan the work in. It also has the benefit of being more forgiving of errors than the adhesive sheets.

There are Japanese manufactured papers just made for manga, even tells you the margins where you should have image and text at so it is better for the publishers to work with. Very nice and smooth, but expensive though. I've never seen its sold in US. I got my through international mail from Japan. :D

I usually draw the initial drawings on to paper and then scan it. Then, I open it in manga studio and ink and tone or whatever I want.
And yes Legend, I want the Cintiq too...so...so...much.
