A game that came out at the same time as Final Fantasy 7 (and should have made headlines btw) was Panzer Dragoon Saga for the Sega Saturn. The graphics were alot more realistic ( no bigheads and no big forearms more like Final Fantasy 8 character wise) and the backgrounds were actual 3d environments, and not prerendered 3d that panned and zoomed on occasion. The fights were alot more interesting and you had to use your head alot more. It was still turn based but you could fly your dragon in and out of the most dangerous regions of attack from your targets. With Final Fantasy 7 I had to stand on one end of the screen and get hit and heal up. It was too repetetive. The only upside I saw to Final Fantasy was the story and FMV movies. Then again, I don't play games based on the quality of an FMV I play it based on how much fun and engrossing it is. Final Fantasy was better as the Advent Children 3d movie than a game. I had more fun seeing that than actually playing Final Fantasy 7 on PSX. The only problem that Panzer Dragoon had was Sega Saturn was a dying system and they couldn't afford to market this game like Sony Playstation could for Final Fantasy. Also, when I saw the commercials for Final Fantasy 7, I saw no gameplay at all. All I saw were the coollooking FMV movies. I remember one time, my friend Mohammed saw that commercial and told me, Man! that game looks like the best game ever to come out! Did you see those graphics!? We goto blockbuster to rent it, first words to come out of his mouth when he started playing, and I'm not lying, " This sh*t looks NOTHING like the commercials this sucks!* His words not mine. Don't kill the messenger lol
As I said, the movie was cool, the story was cool, as a game, it's not the greatest RPG of all time. RPG stands for Role Playing GAME. Meaning GAMEPLAY has to be better than everyone elses, and the graphics has to be better than everyone elses at that time. And it wans't. Just the story. Here's a link to a boss fight from Panzer Dragoon Saga:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40IJDmZyFIMI like how they have voice acting and everything in this game. Final Fantasy didn't really catch up to this game till Final FAntasy 10 for the PS2. And this system Sega Saturn wasn't as good at 3d as the Playstation was. They were even pulling off Reflective surfaces in this game for the water. the system wasn't really capable of reflective surfaces,, but they were putting an animated texture of the sky at a transparent opacity on the water's surface to give it that effect. They were pulling all the stops on this game. I don't get why FF7 didnt do any of this. Oh well lol
Yeah not looking to ruffle anyone's feathers. Because I know how hardcore alot of people are about Final Fantasy to the point where they'd riot the streets if anyone said anything about it. I'm not that kind of guy personally. Everyone has they're own opinions. I just like backing up my opinions with facts. well, that's all i gotta say. Peace!
